Conference of Heads of Geographical Units - Bydgoszcz 2025
On 21-22 November, the annual meeting of the Conference of Heads of Geographical Units, which I have the pleasure of chairing in the current term, was held in the hospitable surroundings of the Faculty of Geographical Sciences of Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz. 
Deans and vice-deans from academic centres across Poland (the Conference of Heads of Geographical Units - KKJG), in addition to discussing current issues related to teaching and ongoing research in the field of Earth sciences and Socio-Economic Geography at Polish universities, jointly formulated and, by acclamation, adopted a protest concerning the draft Regulation of the Minister of Education on the core curriculum for pre- school education and the core curriculum for general education for primary schools, including for pupils with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities, dated 19 November 2025.

Meeting of the members of the University Union

On 30 October, a meeting of the members of the University Union for the Development of Study Programmes in the Field of Spatial Management was held, in which I had the pleasure of serving as the Chair of the Executive Committee. 
The meeting provided an opportunity to summarise the Union's activities in the 2024/205 academic year, as well as to agree on initiatives and projects to be implemented in the 2025/2026 academic year. 
Currently, the University Union brings 20 higher education institutions from across Poland, representing all types of universities and offering diverse study programmes related to spatial management.

POLREG Conference 2025 - University of Warsaw

From October 19 to 21, I will be taking part in the proceedings of the 5th Polish Conference on Urban and Regional Research (POLREG), organized by University of Warsaw. 

As part of our active participation in the conference, the Team I lead will present a paper based on the results of the TIPERICO project and the assumptions of the RECORU project, entitled Resilience of Internal Pheripheries in the Face of Crices and Changing Development Conditions.

The opportunity to present our results and the valuable input from the discussion will be utilized in the further work of our project team.

JOINT CONFERENCE IGU 2025 - PUCP Lima

From October 11 to 16, I will be participating in the IGU Thematic Conference on Bridging Perspectives: Exploring Local and Regional Development, Land Use Change, Health, and Biodiversity for a Stronger Connection Between and within Global North and South, organized by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru in Lima.

As part of the team's active participation in the conference, the group I lead will present a paper based on the results of the TIPERICO project and the assumptions of the RECORU project, entitled The Impact of the War in Ukraine on Regional Disparities and Resilience in Central Europe: A Case Study of Poland. 

The opportunity to present our results and the valuable feedback received during the discussion will be used in the further work of our project team.

Congress of Polish Geography - Geography Without Borders - Lublin 2025

From September 10 to 14, I will be taking part in the proceedings of the Congress of Polish Geography held under the slogan Geography Without Borders, organized by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.. 

As part of my many activities during the conference, on behalf of the Team I lead, and based on the results of the TIPERICO project, I will present a paper entitled A New Delimitation of Urban Functional Areas in Poland – Conclusions for the Operational Strengthening of Development Management Agency at the Supra-Local Level in Poland.

The opportunity to present our results and the valuable input from the discussion will be utilized in the further work of our project team.

7th Global Conference on Economic Geography - Clark University (Worcester Massachusetts) 

From June 2 to 9, I participating in the 7th Global Conference on Economic Geography taking place in Clark University in Worcester. 

As part of my active participation in the conference, the team I lead will present the results of research conducted within the TIPERICO project, as well as the objectives of a new project, RECORU, by delivering a paper titled Reinterpretation of Regional Resilience in the Context of Global Crises – Experiences of Internal Peripheries in Poland and Challenges for the EU's External Border Regions.

The opportunity to present our results and the valuable input from the discussion will be utilized in the further work of our project team.

May 22-23th, 2025
University Union Workshops

On May 22-23, I am participating in the University Union Workshops, which provide an opportunity for the annual meeting of the members of this Association. The workshops are held under the theme: Innovations in education in study programs related to spatial management in the context of new demographic, digital, climate, and systematic challenges. The meeting was organized by the Department of Regional Economics and the Environment, University of Lodz with the involvement of the Association's members. 

The workshops were dedicated to issues related to a rapidly changing reality (e.g. artificial intelligence, climate change, demographic challenges, changes in systemic foundations of socio-economic and spatial planning), which are of significant importance for educational programs in the field of spatial management. These changes require a redefinition of the content and teaching methods. The aim of workshops is to exchange knowledge and experiences in this area within two groups:

  • academics from over 20 universities affiliated with the University Union, 
  • students from scientific circles (and doctoral students) involved in programs related to spatial management across the country. 

The workshops aim to develop recommendations for improving the teaching process and to identify directions for the development of professionals in the field of spatial management. An important aspect of the workshops is the comparison of the results development by academics with the solutions proposed by students, as well as the establishment of direct contracts and collaboration among participants.

55th GAP SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM 

From March 14-16, 2025, at the invitation of the Organizers – the College of Economy and Public Administration at the Cracow University of Economics – I have the pleasure of participating in the 55th GAP Scientific Symposium.

This jubilee meeting in Krynica-Zdrój will focus on the development challenges of local government in Poland and the future of the European automotive industry. In accordance with the wishes of the hosts, including the initiator of these meetings, Prof. Jerzy Hausner, I have the honor of serving as the host of the first day, moderating a discussion on Polish local government.

Presentation of the results of the TIPERICO Project at NCU

On March 6, 2025, I had the pleasure of participating in a scientific seminar organized by the Institute of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the final results of the TIPERICO project: "Trajectories and Challenges of Development in Internal Peripheries under New Post-SARS-CoV-2 Cohesion Conditions", funded by the National Science Centre (grant no. 2020/37/B/HS4/01034).

During the meeting, an engaging discussion took place on the development challenges of peripheral areas and the crisis of development policy in Poland.

The project is being implemented by a consortium of three universities: Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (project leader), Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and Poznań University of Economics and Business. The project team includes: Prof. Paweł Churski (AMU) (project leader), Prof. Czesław Adamiak, Dr. Anna Dubownik, Dr. Barbara Szyda (NCU), and Dr. Maciej Pietrzykowski (UEB).

TESSA MEMORANDUM: Towards Efficient, Simpler, Strategic Assistance under post-2027 Cohesion Policy 

On November 15, 2024, an expert report on the future of cohesion policy post-2027 was presented at the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy. This report offers an independent perspective in the ongoing discourse concerning the forthcoming EU programming period. It was my distinct privilege to contribute to the development of this position, and I encourage all interested parties to review it: the Tessa Memorandum.

IV Polish Conference on Urban and Regional Research POLREG 2024

From October 20 to 22, we had the pleasure of hosting nearly 100 participants of 4th Polish Conference on Urban and Regional Research POLREG 2024 at the Faculty of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management of Adam Mickieiwcz University, representing 33 centres and institutions from all over Poland. This year's edition of the conference was held under the theme "Towards Integrated Development Planning",

Planning in a New Way - Law and Practice 

On October 19, 2024, I had the pleasure of delivering a lecture as part of Module 1.3 "Integration of Spatial Planning with Strategic Planning - Integrated Planning" within the course "Planning in a New Way - Law and Practice" organized by the Faculty of Architecture of the Poznan University of Technology, the Faculty of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management of Adam Mickiewicz University, and the Urban Planning Office in Poznan, which is funded under the National Recovery Plan.

Thank you for the session! I hope that despite the marginalization of this topic in the training framework prepared by the Ministry of Development and Technology, I have convinced you of the fundamental role of integrated development planning in the functioning of the development planning system at every spatial level. Let’s hope that we will eventually be able to implement this approach in Polish planning practice, despite the unfavorable conditions resulting from the absurd timeline for implementing elements of the planning system reform in Poland.

The IV Congress of Urban and Regional Policy in Kraków

On October 7-8, 2024, at the invitation of the organizers, I have the pleasure of participating in the IV Congress of Urban and Regional Policy in Kraków.

The IV Congress of Urban and Regional Policy is held under the theme "Poland at Different Speeds? Strategic Development Challenges for Polish Cities and Regions." One of the key challenges is a more territorially sensitive development policy. How can we design and implement it? I hope we will find the answer to this question during the meeting in Kraków.

Summary of the First Stage of Work at Policy Lab - LIFE AFTER COAL PL in Wielkopolska

On September 18, 2024, a meeting was held at the Poznań Science and Technology Park summarizing the first stage of work in the Policy Lab of the LIFE AFTER COAL PL project in Wielkopolska.

The LIFE program is a financial instrument of the European Union aimed at co-financing projects in the areas of environmental protection, nature, and the impact of human activity on the climate. The main objective of this program is to support the implementation of EU environmental law, promote pro-environmental and pro-climate policies, and identify and promote new solutions in these areas.

The integrated and consortium project submitted to the LIFE program, involving several dozen partners from Greater Poland, titled "LIFE AFTER COAL PL," is related to the implementation of the Climate Neutrality Strategy for Eastern Greater Poland 2040.

The LIFE AFTER COAL PL project, in which I have the pleasure of participating, is a response to the challenges faced by Eastern Wielkopolska related to the necessity of reducing the use of fossil fuels in the economy while maintaining national energy security and the stability of the local socio-economic system.

From August 26th to August 30th, I am participating in the 63rd Congress ERSA: Regional Science Dialogues for Peace and Sustainable Development in Universidade dos Azores.. 

As part of active participation in the conference, the team he leads will present further research results carried out as part of the project TIPERICO, giving a two lecture entitled: How to slip out of the inner periphery - a qualitative study of development factors and barriers and Internal peripheries in Poland -why cohesion policy does not always work.

Debate on the future of regional policy and cohesion policy of the European Union 

Conclusions from the OECD's work, including the Regional Outlook 2023 report, were the main topic of the seminar on regional differences in OECD countries, in which I participated at the invitation of the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy. The meeting was attended by Jan Szyszko, Deputy Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, as well as experts, representatives of local governments and non-governmental organizations.

During the meeting, OECD representatives presented conclusions and recommendations resulting from the Regional Outlook 2023 - The Longstanding Geography of Inequalities report and from workshops organized by the OECD on the territorial dimension (place-based policies for the future).

The seminar was an opportunity to discuss the priorities and demands in the field of the country's regional policy and cohesion policy after 2027 and constituted a significant contribution in the context of work on national strategic documents in the area of development policies.

Wielkopolska's path to climate neutrality 

On February 23, 2024, an event occurred at the Marshal's Office of the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poznań: Wielkopolska's path to climate neutrality.

The conference was an opportunity to discuss the most urgent challenges facing regions on the way to climate neutrality, with particular emphasis on the transformation of coal regions. During this event, the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) declaration was also signed in the presence of the British and Canadian ambassadors to Poland, as representatives of the governments that initiated the coalition during COP23 in 2017 in Bonn. PPCA is the world's first and only coalition of national and local governments and businesses working together to transition away from coal-fired power generation. The conference was an opportunity to launch the LIFE After Coal PL project - Implementation of the Strategy for Climate Neutrality. Eastern Greater Poland 2040.

At the organizers' invitation, I had the pleasure of participating in this conference, presenting an introduction to the discussion - familiarizing the participants with the presentation entitled: Development challenges of coal regions in the conditions of energy transformation and participating in a panel discussion.

It should be emphasized here that for years, I have been actively supporting the energy transformation process, which in Greater Poland concerns Eastern Greater Poland to the greatest extent. A team of Faculty employees under my supervision prepared expert opinions and diagnoses that were used to formulate recommendations regarding the just transformation of coal regions in Poland (https://www.sbc.org.pl/dlibra/publication/681326) and were also used in the process of developing the Development Strategy for Eastern Greater Poland 2040 (https://amu.edu.pl/dla-mediow/komunikaty-prasowe/uam-zaangazowany-w-opracowanie-strategii-rozwoju-wielkopolski-Wschodni-2040), the preparation of which I supported as an expert scientific. Conference Rural areas: transformations - processes - development challenges

On November 21-22, 2023, I participated in the Conference Rural areas: transformations - processes - development challenges organized by the Committee for Spatial Economy and Regional Planning of the Polish Academy of Sciences, dedicated to the memory of prof. Konrad Czapiewski.

As part of the active participation in the conference, the team he leads presented the results of research on the relationship between the inner peripheries and rural areas in Poland, which were carried out as part of the TIPERICO project, presenting a paper entitled Internal peripheries in the light of selected classifications of rural areas. We will use the opportunity to present our results and valuable voices in the discussion in the further work of our project team.

Regional Territorial Forum in Olsztyn

On November 9, at the organizers' invitation, I had the opportunity to moderate the meeting of the Regional Territorial Forum in Olsztyn. The strategic discussion topic was defined as Warmia and Masuria friendly to society in the era of demographic changes. It was the first strategic discussion in the series of debates of the Warmia and Mazury Territorial Forum Warmia and Mazury of the Future - vision 2050. On what advantages should the region's strength be built? The adopted formula embodies the idea of social participation in strategic programming at the regional level. The next meeting of the Warmian-Masurian Territorial Forum will take the form of debates focused on the vision of developing the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in 2050. In this way, the challenges facing the region in the future will be identified.

On October 22-24, 2023, I am participating in the 3rd Polish Conference on Urban and Regional Research - POLREG 2023, organized by the Wrocław University of Economics.

As part of active participation in the conference, the team he leads will present the results of research on the internal peripheries in Poland, which were carried out as part of the TIPERICO project, giving a paper titled: The spread of development processes in the inner periphery in turbulent times. We will use the opportunity to present our results and valuable voices in the discussion in the further work of our project team.

The conference will also be an opportunity to share experiences related to research on the just transformation process in Poland. In this respect, the team of the Department of Regional and Local Studies, which he heads, will present the scope and results of research carried out in this area in Eastern Greater Poland.

On July 11-15, I participate in the 35th AESOP Annual Congress, which is held at the University of Lodz under the title: Integrated planning in a world of turbulence. As part of my active participation in the congress, I prepared and moderated the sessions in Track 14: CEE planning doctrines and practices.

Congress of Polish Geography 2023

On June 1-3, I participate in the proceedings of the Congress of Polish Geography 2023 held at the Collegium Geographicum of the Adam Mickiewicz University. As part of my active participation in the Congress, I have the pleasure of presenting the research results of two projects:

IGU Commission Geography of Governance. International Conference: LOCAL GOVERNANCE IN A TIME OF GLOBAL EMERGENCIES

In period August 26th - September 2nd, I participate in the conference of the Commision of Geography of Administration of the International Geographical Union: LOCAL GOVERNANCE IN A TIME OF GLOBAL EMERGENCIES, co-organized by Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. 

As part of active participation in the conference, representatives of the Polish Team in the TeRRIFICA project Consortium, which I manage, will present the results of the research and the process of preparing the Plan of Adaptation to Climate Change in the Poznań Agglomeration in which the following approaches were used: Responsible Research and Innovation and Citizen Science, in a talk titled: Co-creation for developing the local climate emergency responses - lessons from Poznań Agglomeration in Poland. 

We will use the opportunity to present our results and valuable voices in the discussion to further the work of our Project Team.

On July 18-22, I take part in the historic Congress of the International Geographical Union: The Centennial Congress IGU 2022 Paris –Time for Geographers

Regional field exercises MASURIA 2022

On June 13-19, together with my colleagues from the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences of the Adam Mickiewicz University, I conduct regional field exercises for second-year students of geography, socio-economic geoanalysis and environmental management. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the geological structure, geomorphology, features of the relief as well as environmental and socio-economic conditions of the development of North-Eastern Poland.

13th Czech-Polish-Slovak Seminarium: Geography for times in disarry

On June 1-3. I am participating in the 13th edition of the Czech-Polish-Slovak Geographical Seminar, which is organized by the Charles University in Prague in Kostelec nad Ohri.

As part of the active participation in the conference, I had the pleasure to present the first results of the TIPERICO project by giving a lecture entitled The inner peripheries in Poland in the system of multidimensional spatial developmental differentiation - old wine in a new bottle?

TeRRIFICA - 8th Consortium Meeting in Poznań

On May 30 - June 3, the Faculty of Human Geography and Planning AMU is organizing another meeting of the TeRRIFICA Project Consortium (H2020).

The meeting is accompanied by "Green Walk with TeRRIFICA", organized as part of the EU Green Week, including two events. The first will be a seminar dedicated to the academic community, including students and doctoral students, conducted by Jan Gustav Strandeasen, UNEP expert, entitled "The Agenda that changed the world "and concerning, above all, the challenges related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals. The second will be the so-called green walk along the Warta Valley, which combines elements of the history of the city of Poznań and touches upon the importance of rivers in our urban ecosystem and actions taken to preserve biodiversity and introduce green challenges to urban space.

Think Cohesion

On May 18th, the first expert meeting (think tank) on the 8th Cohesion Report (after this the Report) and the Cohesion Policy after 2027 was held at the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy seat. The purpose of the meeting, in which I participated at the Organizers' invitation, was to discuss the future of the publication of the 8th Cohesion Report and the commencement of the preparation process for the Polish Presidency of the EU Council in January - June 2025.

The focus was in particular on discussing the draft EU Council conclusions to the Report, presenting findings and recommendations from expert opinions taking into account the context (1) of European Union policy and global trends; (2) the internal market and industrial policy of the EU; (3) investment needs of Polish regions; and (4) reflection on the changing role of cohesion policy in the EU. After the speeches, time was devoted to a debate on the significance of the cohesion policy in the overall EU activities and the preferred directions of its changes to allow the full implementation of Polish interests in the international arena.

During the meeting, I had the pleasure of presenting the results of my expert opinion on the Report's assumptions in the context of the investment needs of Polish regions. During my speech, I discussed the most critical challenges of cohesion from the point of view of essential needs of the EU and Poland; recommended directions of changes in the cohesion policy in the light of the need to strengthen European integration and the future role and importance of the cohesion policy in the face of the progressive centralization of tools and their financing. The presentation emphasized the need to adapt investments to local needs, in line with the territorial approach. He also drew attention to the need to review Community policies in the face of new challenges.

IMPACT 2022

On May 11-12, 2022, at the Conference Center of the Poznań International Fair, the second edition of the National Conference IMPACT was held, which is a forum for discussion on current development challenges, attended by representatives of non-governmental organizations, government, and local administration, economy and science. Again, at the invitation of the organizers, I had the pleasure of participating in this meeting. The panel I participated in was entitled: Spatial order - does poor public space management impoverish Poles and lower their quality of life? and was prepared by the Polish Economic Institute (PIE).

Local Government Financial Congress - Local Trends Sopot 2022

Local Trends is a project initiated by Jacek Jaśkowiak, the President of the City of Poznań and Jacek Karnowski, the Mayor of Sopot, whose overarching goal is to effectively and substantively initiate a constructive discussion across the divisions about the social and economic environment for the development of the Polish local government and the country.

On April 11-12, 2022, at the invitation of the organizers, I have the pleasure to participate in the Local Government Financial Congress as part of the Local Trends project in Sopot.

Presentation of the strategic diagnosis of the Kalisz-Ostrow Agglomeration

On December 20, 2021 at the Kalisz City Hall, during a meeting of the Kalisz-Ostrow Agglomeration Association Council, a team of employees of the Department of Human Geography and Planning Adam Mickiewicz University presented the results of a strategic diagnosis prepared as part of the research work supporting the process of developing a Supra-Local Development Strategy for the Kalisz-Ostrow Agglomeration. These works are carried out under the agreement concluded between the Kalisz-Ostrow Agglomeration Association and the Adam Mickiewicz Universit in Poznań.

Classes scheduled for December 20th, will be held as agreed with the students.

On December 13, 2021, at the City Hall in Chojnice took place a strategic debate was organized by the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management and the City of Chojnice, during which the speakers and representatives of the city discussed the city's strategic challenges resulting from current processes taking place on a regional scale, national and international.

COVID-19 Local Government Report - THINK TANK OPEN EYES ECONOMY

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was a solid test of the quality of the functioning of our government structures, innovation in the educational sector and the efficiency of public health care. A team of OPEN EYES ECONOMY think thank experts, chried by prof Jerzy Hausner, carried out an in-depth analysis of the situation and developing a number of short expert opinions and recommendations regularity published on the OPEN EYES Economy Summit website - it's worth knowing, in the form of educational, social, local government, cultural, business, economic, water and health alerts. The join work of representatives of various circles: scientists, academics, representatives of business, culture, and local government officials allowed for a broad view of the discussed problems in various areas of life.
